EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of the fall of Lierre, a Belgian town located just 15 miles from Antwerp during World War One. The image showcases the heroic efforts of Royal Marines who have successfully blown up the bridge across the River Nethe, denying enemy forces any cover. Determined to eliminate all potential hiding spots for their adversaries, these brave soldiers are seen pulling down anything that could provide shelter or concealment. On one side of the destroyed bridge, more Marines stand ready and vigilant, prepared to face an imminent attack. The houses overlooking the bridge and river suffered heavy damage as German snipers took advantage of their vantage points through shattered windows. Despite being trapped on the far bank initially, a small group of resourceful Marines managed to escape by crossing the river in makeshift boats. Their daring escape serves as a testament to their unwavering courage and determination amidst chaos and destruction. Taken around October 2nd in 1914, this photograph by Tom Grant transports us back in time to witness a critical moment in history when conflict ravaged European streets. It reminds us not only of the sacrifices made by these valiant soldiers but also serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's resilience during times of war.
