Part of Box 234 Boswell Collection - The Channel Islands The first harbour at Creux was built in 1588 by the first settlers, but the present harbour dates from 1868, the winter storms of 1865/6 destroying the original walls. The picturesque old harbour is now used mainly by fishermen and yachtsmen, or by ferries which cannot enter Maseline Harbour due to adverse conditions. There is also a small enclosed beach reached via a tunnel in the rock. The famous Sark Water Carnival is held at Creux in mid summer. http:/ports.org.uk/port.asp?id=146 Date: circa 1900

Channel Creux Dates Destroying Present Settlers Storms Walled Walls
EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the quaint beauty of Creux Harbour in the Channel Islands, dating back to around 1900. The harbor, with its small, walled enclosure, has a rich history that spans over four centuries. The first harbor at Creux was constructed in 1588 by the initial settlers, but the existing structure we see today was built in 1868. Tragically, the earlier harbor walls were destroyed during the severe winter storms of 1865/6. The charming old harbor is now primarily used by local fishermen, yachtsmen, and those ferries unable to enter Maseline Harbour due to unfavorable conditions. Nestled within the harbor's protective walls, the boats appear serene against the backdrop of the rugged cliffs and clear blue waters. A small, enclosed beach can be accessed via a tunnel in the rock, adding to the harbor's allure. The picturesque harbor of Creux is a popular venue for various events, most notably the famous Sark Water Carnival, which takes place every mid-summer, adding to the community's vibrant spirit. This photograph, part of the Boswell Collection on Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the enduring charm and resilience of the Channel Islands and their unique harbors.
